A Day in Shimizu: Ink, Ceremony & the Poetry of Place

Some ports sneak up on you with their charm, Shimizu was one of those. It gave us art and reverence in the morning, laughter and learning on the bus ride back, and flavors from the sea that will stay with me forever.

Carving Your Own Memory: Utagawa Hiroshige’s Prints Come to Life

We began at the Tōkaidō Hiroshige Museum of Art, named for the master artist Utagawa Hiroshige, the man whose brush captured Japan’s soul along the Fifty‑Three Stations of the Tōkaidō, scenic snapshots turned into timeless poetry.

Stepping into those galleries, I felt both small and whole, knowing centuries had been before me. The air seemed to hum with centuries of ink. Then, the surprise: we weren’t just observers. We were invited to make our own woodblock print! What an engaging way to interact with art.. Layering colors, pressing paper, watching white become alive as the design emerged beneath our fingers was so energizing. It cost just a few hundred yen, but the piece carried weight, a memory printed by our own hands, echoing Hiroshige’s legacy.

A Ritual in Motion: The Tea Ceremony

A short walk away, we were seated in a tea house where every gesture was mindful, every pause calculated. The thin steam of matcha cups felt like time itself slowing. The ceremony held space for intention, discipline, and gratitude, not just for the tea, but for the morning unfolding in layers of quiet respect.

Lessons, Laughter & Mt. Fuji Origami

On our ride back, our guide transformed the drive into a classroom of life. We learned about Japan’s tapestry of 800+ deities, folded miniature Mount Fuji origami, and ended with a singalong that brought the bus to reverent laughter and unity.

A Harbor-Side Feast

Dropped off near the Kashi no Ichi Fish Market, we landed at a waterfront spot just in time for the afternoon tide and tuna so fresh it still felt ocean-born – tuna sashimi, sakura shrimp with the gentlest kiss of sweetness, and the local mandarin juice spritz that brightened every flavor.

Two Paths to Fuji

My daughter and son-in-law chose the Mt. Fuji excursion, chasing the mountain’s grandeur while my sister-in-law and I followed ink paths and tea trails. We each found beauty; theirs in the peaks, ours in print and sip. You can read her lovely take [here → link].

Shimizu, Inked in Memory

By evening, I carried more than souvenirs. I carried impressions –  of wood, paper, warmth, song, and waves. Hiroshige captured journeys and places with ink long ago. That day, I honored his vision by printing my own memory. And as the ship pulled away, I felt the quiet rhythm of travel, not in steps, but in moments along the Tokaido Trail as I slowly allowed the art seep into my soul.

Thank you, Hiroshige, for capturing this fascinating moment in time…
