From Romancecar to Ropeways: A Dreamy Day in Hakone
There are days that feel like stepping into a postcard, and then there are days in Hakone, where the postcards feel like they’re trying to keep up.
Just outside Tokyo, Hakone is where hot springs meet mountain mist, and where every train, tram, and cable car feels like a secret path to something beautiful. Our one-day trip may have started with heels, but it ended with hiking hearts and steamy skies.
The Romance Begins
We boarded the Odakyu Romancecar at Shinjuku Station, and honestly, we were sold on the name alone. But this limited express train lived up to its charm: wide windows, reclining seats, and the soft hum of escape. Coffee in hand, we rolled past cityscapes into rising green hills and arrived at Hakone-Yumoto Station about 90 minutes later, already feeling like we’d crossed into another world.
Fun fact: The Romancecar was Japan’s first train to allow passengers to eat and drink freely when it launched in 1957. Clearly, it’s been fabulous since day one.

Into the Mountains on the Hakone Tozan Railway
At Hakone-Yumoto, we transferred to the Hakone Tozan Railway, Japan’s oldest mountain railway. This wasn’t just a ride; it was a climb. Winding through the dense forest, the train made zig-zag switchbacks (yes, it literally changes direction mid-trip!) as we climbed toward Gora, where steam, moss, and magic awaited.
Heels to Hikes Hint: Sit on the left side for views of waterfalls, wooden bridges, and the occasional temple peeking through the trees.
Midday – Steam, Sculpture & Sky Views
Though our exact path from Gora flexed with the weather and time, Hakone gave us plenty of riches:
- We soaked in the beauty of Owakudani, a volcanic valley where black eggs boil in sulfur springs.
- We glided above the clouds on the Hakone Ropeway, catching surreal views of Mount Fuji – such a gift! Her sight brought tears to my eyes…
- We strolled the lakeside promenade of Lake Ashi, where the red torii gate of Hakone Shrine rises dramatically from the water like something out of a legend.
- A visit to the Hakone Open-Air Museum, where modern sculpture meets mountaintop serenity. Art has never looked so alive.
- We ended our day by slipping into a historical traveler stop, Amazake Choya on the Old Tokaido Trail, a warm, cozy retreat.
Nourishment Along the Way
Lunch was casual and delightful: steaming bowls of soba with mountain vegetables, or a quick bento grabbed between transfers. Hakone doesn’t push itself on you—it simply invites you to slow down, notice, and taste.
The Temptation of the Onsen
Though we didn’t stay overnight, Hakone’s onsen presence is everywhere: drifting steam, the soft scent of minerals in the air, signs pointing to ryokan retreats. If you ever want to build a trip around nothing but bathing, this is the place.
Note to self: Next time, book a room with a private outdoor tub and watch the mist roll over the hills.
Return to Tokyo, Hearts Full
Late evening rolled us back to the Romancecar, legs stretched out and minds humming with memories. There’s something deeply grounding about a place like Hakone; part nature, part nostalgia, all soul.
Final Thoughts
Hakone is more than a day trip; it’s a breath. A little pocket of stillness and scenery where you’re never quite sure what’s around the bend, but you know it will be beautiful.
Whether it’s misty mountains or mirrored lakes, switchback trains or sulfur steam, this place gently reminds you:
Slow down. Breathe deep. And let the mountains do the talking.
Heels to Hikes Hint:
For your Hakone day trip, you’ll be traversing mountain railways, volcanic paths, cable cars, and lakeside shrines, so you’ll need a shoe that’s rugged enough for the terrain but still stylish and comfortable for a day of curated adventure.
Tote Bag Tip:
- Puffer jacket and pashmina – you may see snow!
- Foldable slippers or cozy socks if you plan to visit indoor spaces like the Hakone Open-Air Museum or relax at a public footbath. Bonus: they’re great for the return Romancecar ride!
